Red Nose Day - Friday March 18th 2011

Well it's that time of year again when the whole Country goes mad to do something funny to raise cash to transform lives across the UK and Africa.

RED NOSE DAY FACTS!!

In 1988 the first Red Nose Day raised £15 Million.
In 2009, you helped to raise over five times that figure!

Red Nose Day money is currently at work in 25 countries across Africa,
as well as all four nations in the UK.

Their first single, by Cliff Richard and The Young Ones, went straight to No 1 in 1986.
Since then they’ve had 21 singles, 12 of which have topped the charts.

St. Patrick's Day - March 17th

Facts about St. Patrick's Day Holiday
  • St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Children wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair.

  • Many cities have a St. Patrick’s Day parade.Dublin, the capital of Ireland, has a huge St. Patrick’s Day festival from March 15-19, that features a parade, family carnivals, treasure hunt, dance, theatre and more. In North American, parades are often held on the Sunday before March 17. Some paint the yellow street lines green for the day! In Chicago, the Chicago River is dyed green with a special dye that only lasts a few hours. There has been a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Boston, Massachusetts since 1737. Montreal is home to Canada’s longest running St. Patrick’s Day parade, which began in 1824.

Shrove Tuesday - 8th March 2011

Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day.
Pancakes were made and eaten to use up rich food stuffs, like eggs and milk,
prior to fasting for the period of Lent.

Mmm I love pancakes, especially with sugar and lemon topping.

What's your favourite topping?

Pancake races have also formed part of Shrove Tuesday traditions and customs.

I couldn't find many pancake items on Folksy so here are a few I found,
they are soooo cute!!

Grandma's Shoes...

I came across this poem today and thought it apt to share it with you.
I am a grandma too and presently I have eight beautiful grandchildren, two girls and six boys.
Now I make all sorts out of socks.

Grandma´s Shoes
~ by Betty Cesna

When I was very little
All the Grandmas that I knew
Were wearing the same kind
Of ugly grandma shoes..

You know the kind I mean..
Clunky heeled, black, lace-up kind,
They just looked so very awful
That it weighed upon my mind,

For I knew, when I grew old.
I'd have to wear those shoes,
I'd think of that, from time to time
It seemed like such bad news.

I never was a rebel,
I wore saddle shoes to school,
And next came ballerinas
Then the sandals, pretty cool.

And then came spikes with pointed toes
Then platforms, very tall,
As each new fashion came along
I wore them, one and all.

But always, in the distance,
Looming in my future, there,
Was that awful pair of ugly shoes,
The kind that Grandmas wear,

I eventually got married
And then I became a Mom
Our kids grew up and left,
And when their children came along,

I knew I was a Grandma
And the time was drawing near
When those clunky, black, old lace up shoes
Was what I'd have to wear.

How would I do my gardening
Or take my morning hike?
I couldn't even think about
How I would ride my bike!

But fashions kept evolving
And one day I realized
That the shape of things to come
Was changing, right before my eyes.

And now, when I go shopping
What I see, fills me with glee
For, in my jeans and Reeboks
I'm as comfy as can be.

And I look at all these little girls
And there, upon their feet
Are clunky, black, old Grandma shoes,
And I really think that's neat.

A Host of Golden Daffodils...

I noticed the bulbs are once again pushing through the soil in my garden; I'm so looking forward to all the Spring flowers appearing.  This inspired me to make this Daffodil Ladies Sock Posy today, hope you like it...

Daffodils by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed - and gazed - but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Somewhere, over the rainbow....

On the way to Bangor

Over the sea in Fuerteventura

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

New to Blogging!

It's early Sunday morning and I'm still trying to work out how to use Blogger!

I'm trying to add photos to my posts, can anyone help???

Too busy to craft today!!

Well I've been waiting all week to carry on making my sock posies, but unfortunately hubby had other ideas for me.  He started knocking out our fireplace ready to install a log burner and guess who had to help!!  Yes that's right - ME!!

So yet another day has gone by and no posies made, hope I have better luck tomorrow, I'm really getting withdrawal symptoms ........
